JOIN THE BOARD

In the interest of adhering to our core value of organizational excellence, Latinos in Virginia Empowerment Center is committed to recruiting and working with a diverse group of community leaders that represent different backgrounds and skill sets. Below we have listed a set of duties, skills, and commitments expected from those interested in joining our Board of Directors:

Single Position Description:

Position Purpose: Together with other members of the Board, this position is legally responsible for all activities of the agency.

 

Board members are responsible for:

  • Determining the agency's major policies

  • Approving the annual budget and monitoring/approving the corporate finances

  • Employing/supervising the agency's CEO

  • Providing direction and leadership in order to achieve the agency's philosophy, mission, and strategic plan

 

Individual Board Member Commitments:

 

  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in at least 3 of 4 Board of Director's quarterly meetings

  • Participate in at least one committee

  • Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability

  • Use your skills in a way that advances the mission of Latinos in Virginia Empowerment Center

  • Abstain from any actions that might lead to a “conflict of interest”

  • Make a thoughtful contribution to the agency

  • To actively participate in the fund development/fundraising and other agency activities

  • Enhance the organization's public standing by promoting its work within your circles of influence

  • Nurture the future leadership and governance of the Board by submitting strong nominees for vacancies on the Board of Directors

  • confidentiality

 

Skill Required:

  • Speak Spanish and/or have experience working with the Hispanic/Latino community in Virginia

  • Ability to rise above personal bias/prejudice, for the common good and needs of the organization as a whole.

  • Competence to judge an idea on its own merit

  • Ability to respectfully express frank and honest opinions

  • Ability to work in concert with other volunteers and to share partnership with Latinos in Virginia Empowerment
    team (staff) members

  • Ability to willingly tackle each important and demanding task

  • Ability to look at both the present and the future and have vision and perspective
